You've always wanted do take a painting class, but you don't think you're talented enough, what if your painting turns out ugly ? It'd be so embarassing. and you think to yourself "I'm not talented enough, I probably shouldn't take a painting class" But, everytime you see a painting, the urge keeps on coming back and you keep on wondering. Hmm..... :) Why do you have to feel embarrassed ? Why must you be afraid to try ? If you never try then you'll never know.
Now you're sure that you wanna take that painting lesson, but you have no idea where to go, nor what painting supplies to get.
Well..... since you're a beginner, you can buy oil / acrylic / watercolour paint set, etc. There are a lot of brands out there, Reeves, Sakura, Staedtler, Faber-Castell, etc. You don't have to buy the more expensive, professional grade paint nor buy all the available paint colours, you can just get a set of 8 to 12 paint tubes, that would be enough, you can always mix those colours to create a different colour.
Paintbrush for Oil and Acrylic paint are about the same, you can get "Eterna" brand which is cheap suitable for beginners,
and Watercolor paintbrush is the softer round type. You can also get palettes, they're usually available in bookstores such as Gramedia, Gunung Agung, or sometimes even at a shop near your house :)
Not sure which brand to get ? well, it doesn't really matter which brand at this point, just buy the ones that you like most, and when you get better, you can always upgrade your painting supplies :)
Painting with Oil Paint can be an option because of the longer dying time, it's easier to blend on the canvas, but the smell's a bit strong , and you need a thinner type solution to rinse the paintbrush... so you're gonna need to paint in a well ventilated area :)
Or you can choose Acrylic paint, doesn't smell and you can rinse it with water and soap, dries quickly, so your painting's "done" in
no time, but blending colours on the canvas might be a bit difficult because the paint's quick drying time. But you can always add a retarding medium to slow drying rate, or learn the proper technique :)
I personally prefer Acrylic paint because I paint in my room so the room doesn't smell hehehe I used to work with Oil paint and after I painted, the room would smell like Oil paint for hours.
Or if you'd prefer watercolor, go ahead,.... I'm kinda scared to work with watercolor, because corrections are a bit hard to do, but it's just me, you can always learn it and a lot of people say that watercolor's easy to learn :)
Now that you know which one is your paint of choice, next step is looking where to take the painting lessons.
I suggest you do a "survey", you can call to ask the class schedule so you can come a have a look around at the class and other students' artworks, even the instructor's artwork. Because you'd wanna learn from someone whose work you like, if not admire, so if you're not really feeling "it" with this one, go look for another art class.
Once you got the right art class, complete painting supplies, well.... let all the Fun begin !!!
So.... don't ever be afraid to start :)
