Traditional Indonesian Musicians at Malioboro, Yogyakarta

I was walking at night around Malioboro, Yogyakarta, looking for something to eat, some batik to buy :)
and from afar I can hear music being played, it just felt so familiar, so right.
so I kept on walking and there they were, Malioboro musicians, they brought such traditional festivity, yes, on the side of the road.
It totally created a wonderful atmosphere in the surrounding area, people stopped walking and stood there to enjoy the music.
Locals and tourists alike, we were all mesmerized by the soothing sound :)
As they were jamming, a delman (traditional horse carriage) and a becak (rickshaw) passed by. Perfect :)
I'd say you have to try sitting in a delman or a rickshaw to truly experience Yogjakarta :)
Anyway.....Enjoy the music :)

Sajojo - Beautiful Indonesia

I bet you've seen this advertising/commercial before, it's where Shanty, Chris John & Donny Kesuma did an ad in Papua and Shanty sang the song "Sajojo"

I don't mean to advertise for the product in the commercial, because I personally think that we can also get energy drink from drinking coconut water or natural fruit juice, way healthier :)
But... this ad... it truly shows us that Indonesia is so beautiful and so rich in culture.
I just wish there were more ads that shows the beauty of Indonesian nature and culture instead of foreign culture.

And it turns out... the traditional song "Sajojo" that Shanty sang, is quite nice huh ?
it's actually a really good song :D
yup... a traditional song :)
This is honestly my first time ever hearing that song....
Man... Do we actually know more foreign songs than our own traditional songs ?
I think it's time we pursue our true talents and start to really see the true potential of the Indonesian culture :)

Indonesia National Anthem forms Water Crystals

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Dr. Masaru Emoto and his Research on Water and water crystals
He proved that if water is exposed to soothing music, words spoken, words typed, pictures and videos, the water that initially doesn't form water crystal will form a beautiful snowflake-like water crystal.
And it also works using our National Anthem.

Malaysia - Indonesia and the need for us as Indonesians to appreciate our own culture.

After all the commotion about Batik, "Rasa Sayange" song, Angklung and Reog Ponorogo being claimed as Malaysian, Now we're faced with another situation where the Pendet Dance (Traditional Balinese dance) is shown in the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Video.

It is said that Malaysia is claiming Tari Pendet as Malaysian.
But according to the News today, a staff from the Discovery channel (the Promotion Video is aired on Discovery Channel) has mistakenly put Tari Pendet in the Video.
Did they not review the Video before putting it on air ?

I don't know what's been patented and what's not.
But if they've been patented, where do Malaysia apply for the patent for Batik or Rasa Sayange song, etc anyway ?
I don't even know if the correct term is a patent , intellectual property right or something else.
Is it a worldwide patent ? and How do they get it if the art originates from Indonesia ?
This isn't like a business, first come first serve.
Or is it under the First-to-file rule ? what about prior Art ?
So... what if Indonesia wants to claim ownership of belly dancing, for example, so all of the sudden, belly dancing becomes one of the traditional dance of Indonesia ?
That's weird, right.
It's confusing to me, really.
What is the foundation to give a patent ?
If you're claiming a patent of a cultural heritage / folklore, Do they not investigate it beforehand ?
What if Indonesia need to patent all of its cultural heritage so other country won't claim it.
That'd be ridiculous, imagine how many patents to claim ???
But claimed or not, patented or not. I think tourists know where Tari Pendet originates from. Besides, whoever has come to Bali will definitely falls in love to Bali and Indonesia :)

Now.... what about us ?
Why do Indonesians not show enough interest in our own traditional Culture.
We don't seem to have enough Cultural appreciations.

Let say in traditional dance, we may be more interested in ballet/salsa in comparison with Balinese dance / Jaipong dance.

It may be understandable if we're less interested in Bedoyo dance because it takes a lot of dedications and patience, but there are other traditional dances available, Balinese dance, Jaipong dance, Saman dance, Topeng dance, there's gotta be some dance that we're interested in.
If we're introduced to the various Indonesian traditional dance from a young age, I'm sure a lot of us would be interested in them.

Could one of the reasons that we are not into traditional dance is because of the location and the facility issue?
Ballet classes, for example, are usually in an Air conditioned building which are strategically located, but traditional dance studio or sanggar tari daerah, have a "lesser" facility and are usually harder to find, some are even located in small alleys, or maybe, even in a posh building especially designated for foreigners. So there's a gap in the middle, us.

Why do most schools don't have Traditional dance as their extra-curricular activity ?
or Besides basketball, why not give the option to take up Sepak Takraw instead ? ;p
They both need skills, they both makes us sweat.
and Instead of learning the so-called flute and pianika, why not learn sasando ?

Is it about the prestige ?
If you take up Sepak Takraw, you won't be needing the newest pair of Nike Air, so that's not cool.
Or when you're abroad, you'd see Ballet concerts in Opera Houses with expensive tickets, but yet, it's always a Full house.... but when we're invited to watch a Pendet dance , we're often reluctant because we find it just a little bit boring.
It's not easy to learn the Pendet dance, so it takes some skills and dedications there, enough for us to appreciate it, but still we find other dance to more amusing.
Is it because it doesn't have a fast movement ? or it's lacking bouncing/acrobatic elements ?

Not to mention that some of the movements of Indonesian traditional dances are "trimmed" because it is considered to be too "vulgar", the dances and the costume that's been a traditional Indonesian dance since forever is considered "impolite". But it's surprising that a more "vulgar" type of dancing is still often aired on TV and XXX VCD/DVD are still widely available everywhere. Why don't those get "trimmed" first ?

Maybe it's about time that we combine traditional dance with modern dance to make a contemporary traditional dance.
You still need to have a strong basics, so you need to learn the traditional dance....
But aren't they already doing this ?? Students of Dance Institutes need to "create" a dance or "interpret" a scene into a dance for their Finals, right ?
So they're already creating some sort of fusion between traditional dance and modern dance.
Maybe there are not enough opportunities for these Artists to showcase their work, so most of us are not aware of them ?
Or is it because the future of so-called Dance Maestros are not very promising ? So instead of developing their talents, they opt to do something else.
There are news about Dance Maestros, now old and sick, and lacking funds for medical treatments.
It's all very Sad.

We actually see a lot of dancers on TV who incorporate traditional dance into modern dance, but it's still doesn't have that "wow" effect on us, there are more modern touch and the traditional one.
Won't it be "prettier" if there were more traditional elements ? more Indonesian :)
Traditional dances that are slightly modernized but still true to the traditional roots which makes it unique in the world, which makes it so Indonesia.
Take Eko "Madonna" Supriyanto for example, he scored a dancer position in Madonna's world tour just because he did the Pencak Silat move in his audition !!!
That's one of the obvious example that our traditional culture is one of the things that distinguishes us and becomes an advantage to us.

When we see an old lady in Bali with her hair all white, still active teaching Balinese dance, still graceful, we're just so amazed at her spirit and talent.... or little kids dancing the Jaipong dance....it's just so interesting to watch those little talents...
But somehow, when they're performing..... we're not really interested in watching a traditional dance on stage. But people don't seem to get bored going to see a Ballet concert, or when we're watching a Music Video on TV , with those hiphop dancers, we don't get bored, at all.
Is it because the costumes ? Is it because of the "sexy" outfits ? Not necesarily, what about guys dancing hiphops with their baggy T-shirts and baggy jeans, they still entertain us with their dance skills.
So we don't need skimpy costumes to attract people, besides, our traditional dance costumes are so diverse and decorative..... the dance itself is beautiful.
But what's seems to be missing when we watch traditional dance show on stage ?
Is it our perceptions that traditional dances are "not cool" ?? not really....
But why do most of us not interested ?

What about a fusion between HipHop dance, Chris Brown style with Pendet Dance accompanied by the sounds of funky Gamelan Bali. Not bad hey.... :)
If in Bataknese music, we have Viky Sianipar.... then there's Djaduk Ferianto who explores percussion and traditional music, who knows new musicians will emerge, focusing on traditional music. For instance, Pendet dance will be accompanied by a more "familiar and easy listening" Gamelan Bali Music. Not to abandon the old tradition, but to introduce little by little the amazing Indonesian culture to those of us who are not so aware of it.
Honestly speaking, there are a lot of local Indonesian folk songs / traditional songs that are really good !! Just by adding a little "twist" to those songs will definitely get us to like them even more.
What about the songs "Si Doel anak sekolahan", that's one !!
"Aduh s*alan, nih si Doel, anak Betawi asli, kerjaanya sembayang mengaji.....dll"
or what about Benyamin S's song "Eh ujan, gerimis aje....."
or Cucokrowo song also has a nice beat to it.
Those songs are not purely traditional, but still has a "kampung" feel to it and super nice to listen to.
n Why do we only hear the Bamboo flute in Dangdut songs only ?

Or... how often do we listen to or buy "Mozart for Babies" or "Instrument Music for Relaxation", why not "Bamboo Flute for Inner Peace" or "Angklung for Breakfast".
Yes there are CD's like this in select music stores, but it's probably produced by foreigners.
Or what about books about Indonesian cultures, again.... produced by foreigners.
What have we done ?
Why do foreigners see such potential in our culture, but we don't ?

But I'm sure that we're more aware now.
This Malaysia situation is like a wake up call for all of us to realize the potential of Indonesian diverse and rich culture, and We as Indonesians have to be proud of our nation's culture.
The government also plays an important role in preserving, guarding and promoting our culture, along with our help :)
Who knows, soon, Indonesian singers will use Traditional Indonesian dancers in their concerts and music videos :) Perhaps Melly Goeslaw will compose a song that uses Sasando musical instruments, or Denada will promote Jaipong dance, Agnes Monica dances hiphop in an energetic "Topeng Dance" style , or Ariel Peterpan sings while playing the Sampe/Sape (Traditional Guitar of Dayak Tribe)
That'd be cool :)

So... start finding out more about Indonesian culture, art, tradition and heritage :)
You'll be amazed :D

Hmm.... I wish one day, to have a SanggarSeni.com building in all corners of Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia, a strategically located building, easy to find, with good facilities.
Different types of IndonesiansTraditional dance courses will be offered there, along with traditional music course, painting course, Indonesian craft course, everything and so that Artists can gather and share their knowledge on Indonesian culture, but not a place to sit around and smoke cigarettes ;p.... Artists don't have to be associated with long messy hair and smokers anymore :)

Not to limit oneself from foreign arts.... I love ballet, tap dancing, taekwondo, pergamano, etc, but I think we need a place where everyone can learn our traditional dances/music/etc and we need to carry on our treasure, our traditional arts :)

I think there are quite a number of these places emerging nowadays.... we all have the same goal... to preserve and to promote Indonesian culture to everyone.... we're not competitors, we complete each other and we all have the same positive goal :)

Unyil and Pak Raden puppet

Do you realize that in Indonesia, it's so easy to find imported dolls/puppets such as Sponge Bob, Barbie, The Simpsons, Snoopy, Garfield, Mickey Mouse, Snow white and the 7 Dwarf, etc etc

But it's so hard.... if not unavailable... when we want to find a real Indonesian doll...

These are some of my collections when I was younger.
I have a The Simpsons figurine.... Lisa's missing tho.

I have 2 hand pupptes of the Seven Dwarf and 2 of Snoopy's gang.

but I don't recall ever seeing the Unyil doll on sale.... ever
Unyil and Pak Raden, Pak Ogah, Meylan, Bu Bariah, Cuplis, etc is a totally Indonesian doll and their stories always have an educational message.
I was just wondering why it's never been sold as a merchandise...
I so want to buy a good quality Unyil & the gang doll.
Hopefully they will be available someday soon :)

Hey... Someday we may even be able to export Unyil and the TV show abroad.
Just like Sesame Street that's available in so many countries in local languages, Who knows Unyil might make it too.
So instead of importing stuff from abroad, this time we're able to export stuff out of Indo :)

Pak Raden is the man who created the character and the designs of the figres in Unyil TV series way back

Pak Raden is Drs. Suyadi, a True Indonesian Artist who's also a Painter, Illustrator, Story Teller and an Actor who played Pak Raden, I think He is a Super Cool Figure who deserves our Respect.

How to Decorate a cake

Have you ever wanted to learn how to decorate a cake ?

Well....
Friends of SanggarSeni.com sent in their wonderful pics learning how to decorate a cake using butter cream with the lovely Mrs. Fatmah Bahalwan from NCC (Natural Cooking Club)
Mrs. Fatmah prepared everything from the pre-made butter cream and decorating utensils, including all the different spuits, scraper, spatula, bowl, flower nail, plastic decorating bags, piping bags etc.

The cake.... well it's actually made out of styrofoam.
So all they have to do is start learning how to decorate :)

Bad experience when Having a Dress made by a so-called Fashion Designer.

Have you ever had a dress made, but the result turned ugly ??
Huhuhhuhu……. Dat’s a bummer.
If you’ve spent quite a lot of cash , spent a lot of time for the fittings, not to mention you got pretty annoyed everytime you went there for a fitting and the dress turned out to be unsatisfactory.

Well, someone sent a story,
Karen had 2 dresses (evening gowns) made in Jakarta and she was so upset with the result.
Here goes :

Hi SanggarSeni.com,

I just want to share a bad experience I had when having a dress made.
I wanted to have an evening gown made because I’ve searched the malls but couldn’t find anything I liked and I was wondering where I could find a designer. So I saw an ad in a magazine and her place happens to be near my house, which also happens to be her garage. Her name is M ( you wish it was M from james bond ;P)

Anyway….
I called her up to ask if I could come by and looked at her designs/dresses.
I got there, looked around and saw this gorgeous dress…
It looked meticulously done… but I suspect it was someone else’s dress and M was asked to make a duplicate…. But I dunno….

So… after asking her some questions and chatting for a while, I decided to have a dress made there.
M also said that the girl who does all the beading and rhinestones used to work at seba (Sebastian Gunawan) and M guarantees the beading would be excellent… what did you hijack en employee from seba ?
Anyhoo… the cost of making 1 dress was around 1.5 million Rp, but the fabric and rhinestones/beads not included in the price…. It takes around 3 weeks to do a dress.
M also sketched a few designs but I didn’t like any of em, I found a dress I liked in a magazine and we started from there….
So in the end, I gave her a deposit of 1.5 million Rp. for 2 dresses.

We even went to the fabric shop together to look for fabrics.
Then I wait for her to call me for the first fitting. I decided to have 2 dresses made.
2 Weeks later, she called me and I went for my first fitting.

First fitting :
1 dress was too big
1 dress was too tight
what ???? Did you make the wrong pattern ???
then she asked me if I've gained weight !!!
yea right, If I’ve gained weight, then both dresses should be too tight !!!

I think I’ve lost count how many fittings I had.
Each time there are new silly mistakes.
In this one, M told the guy that sews for her to fix the skirt of my dress, it only took a while, so I waited there. And the dress was shortened up to my calf, it was supposed to be a full length evening gown !!!
And they both went on a debate………
M even offered to buy me shoes to go with the dress !! what ??? even with flip flops the dress would still be too short.
The dart was out of place, The model of the skirt was wrong.
It was really bad….

Finally, because the party’s approaching and 1 dress is “done” (though not perfect)
I paid for that dress and I paid half price for the other one that’s all wrong.
I didn’t want any arguments, so I just paid around 2.6 million Rp for everything, but I left the all-wrong dress there, I only paid for her time and the fabric but there’s no way that I’m coming back for another crazy annoying fitting.

I think M is a young mommy who’s got nothing to do and took a short fashion design course where she couldn’t even do a proper pattern, and looked for employees to do all the beadings and sewings, and she figured she’d advertised in a magazine and claim herself as a fasion designer… oh my.

Anyway… once I got home that day
I re-tried the fully paid dress
And the inside weren’t sewn !!
I didn’t check that when I was trying it on at her place.
It was really a disaster.

I finally brought the dress to my mom’s designer
And she re-did the dress.
So.. in the end…. The dress cost way out of budget
I spend around 4.5 million Rupiah in total (that’s for 3 dresses, but I only got 1 dress)
4.5 mill is for the actual dress and for the all-wrong dress that I left at M’s place and for re-doing that first dress.
That was the last time I went to a new self-proclaimed fashion designer, next time, If I found a dress that fit but cost a little bit out of my budget, I’m just gonna go for it.

It was seriously time consuming and stressfull to go back and forth for fittings, and the more fittings you do, the worse the dress gets.
Huhuhhu….
I felt really stupid….
Oh I’ll just let it go….

A friend of mine had a different story.
Her old friend happens to be a fashion designer, fresh graduate.
So she had a dress made, and it turned out excellent.
But the second dress was really awful, the result was different from the agreed design and the beading was ugly…. She never used that dress.

Anyway………

Shopping that is not so Fun

So I went to M2 last Monday
yup.. it was crowded as usual even though school holiday's over.

You know how there are people selling bags and sandals on the floors.
You can see them just as you walk in the lobby, they're on the right and left side.
and some are stationed under the escalators.
They're definitely noticeable allright,
they'd walk around showing their bags and yelling " Handbags!! only around Rp.50k "

So I was walking with my friends
and as I was stuck in the human traffic jam ;p

and from like 10 feet away.
I saw a girl opening her handbag, probably getting her wallet to pay for the new handbag that she chose.
So this tall guy holding multiple bags in a yellow shirt, approached her with an unfriendly face
and he said to her "why did you buy the bag here ?"
"you were looking at my bags before, why did you buy it here ?"

At that point I had to keep on walking coz people were started nudging me to move.
so I didn't know what happened next.

But that was scary !!!
I didn't know there were an unwritten law of shopping conduct there.
If it were to me, I'd probably report that guy to the security guy.
I mean, as customers, We are allowed to look at stuff anywhere and then decide where to buy the stuff from.

I've seen shopkeepers got mad at a customer once when I was abroad.
she was mad coz the customer asked for the price but didn't buy the product.
hello.... can't people ask for the price ?????
I didn't think a similar situation would actually happen at M2.

But nevertheless, I don't think that one situation will stop people from shopping there ;p
so :)

So, a few months ago (April 2009) I went to Lembang Area and when I was in a car passing through one of the crowded area, and in front of a Minimart there, I saw this !!!

There were in fact a few Fried Chicken pieces behind those glass showcase.
How Fun is that ?
KuFC Ken-tuku Fried Chicken.... the owner is probably Javanese ?
coz more or less it means " Come on buy the Fried Chicken " :)
So this would fall under the Creative category or Copycat category ?
but it's not exactly a Copycat, I mean, it's a different logo and a different brand name...... ;P

So I finally got a chance to go to INACRAFT, It was on a Thursday, April 23rd 2009, office hour even, and it turned out to be jam packed with people.

It was really crowded inside, people are looking and stopping all over the place, so we were kinda stuck in a fun sight-seeing traffic jam :)

The price ? well, the bag that I was interested in was a bit over Rp.1 million ... hohoho
Am I buying it ? still deciding ....
But Becca does custome made, so you can modif the bags to your liking.

Dowa also has a crowded counter, they sell bags made out of nylon crochet. Located in Yogyakarta, they in fact have exported their bags abroad.
Bag design is more casual, for daily use.

Winter Wonderland..... at the Mall

I was at the mall today, in early December 2008....
The theme of the Christmas decorations is Winter Wonderland, and I saw these 2 guys decorating the rooftop with "snow", which happens to be large sized cotton sheets :) the size of a bolster pillow.

Indonesia Japan Expo 2008

Indonesia Japan Expo in JIEXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta.
1 - 9 November 2008.

I went there on 5 November 2008 at around 2 pm.
Coz it was Wednesday, there weren't so many people around, and not so many events, such as the Miku-miku dance competition, Cosplay, Workshops, etc etc. They're held mostly on weekends.
The expo was held in Hall A & Hall B, and at that time, there was a stage in the middle of the court with a band practicing.

Here is the pic of the entrance tickets (@ Rp. 10.000,-) and some stuff, well basically, expo map, namecards, flyers, and a free fan for filling out a questionnaire. :)

Even the Obake/Japanese style Ghost House was closed.
Noooo.........:(

It was in a small traditional Indonesian Hut, the ones with roof made out of coconut leaves and walls made from bamboo weave.
I so wanna see what's inside !!!! hahaha

Outside the Halls, there were exhibition stands of :

Foto Yukata, where you can take pics with a kimono

Indomanga, an online manga community / forum (www.indomanga.com)

there was also some people playing Go / Igo , a Japanese boardgame that looks kinda like Othello, I think they're from J-sekai, an online community for people who likes japan, cosplay, anime, manga, otaku, etc. (www.jsekai.com)

Also a stand about Japanese Martial Art, Aikido.

And Of course Food and Beverages stands were also there.
Such as Hoka Hoka Bento, Es Teler 77, coffee stands, etc.

I only saw 2 stands inside the hall, selling Japanese cartoony manga style souvenirs, pencils, keychains, etc.
Some Batik stands, there was two ladies making Batik from Yayasan Batik Indonesia.

And some space for POT.
Excuse me ?
well, it's short for Painting on T-shirt, which was kinda fun.
and they say that the paintings on the T-shirts won't fade up to 1 year.

Oh yeah, there was also an Eco House exhibition from Nedo, displaying Biodiesel fule from Sunflower, Windpower for Homes, Furniture from Leftover Woods. in which the picture was taken, a Japanese style room.

There were Japanese Ladies in Kimonos getting ready to demonstrate a green tea ceremony, If I'm not mistaken hehe, coz they were preparing and people started to gather around to see, but they're still preparing and discussing stuff, so I decided to leave and look around the Halls.

Honestly, there weren't too many cultural stands as I expected.
Inside the Halls, There are mostly big brands such as Toshiba, Canon, Daihatsu, etc, And the cultural stands that are there are scattered around the place, hiding in small corners.

I also only saw 2 tiny traditional food stalls serving Takoyaki and Oikonomiyaki.

So, it wasn't actually what I expected from the Indonesia Japan Expo 2008, probably If I came on the weekends, there would me a lot more going on, more Cosplay actions outside, more Workshops, more cultural events.

So on the way out, I saw the "American Donut" stand.
I just had to give it a try. It's a reminiscence of my childhood when I used to go to Duta Merlin on the weekends and sit in their small shop eating Donuts, Orange Juice and Sausages. yum......
So... I bought a donut, the one covered with sugar, my favorite.... hmmm... tasted just like I remembered.

It's not as soft as Krispy Kreme or J Co, but kinda chewy, just right.
But it's kinda pricey @ Rp. 6000,- but hey.... it's not like I get to eat it everyday. So I decided to buy a dozen of 'em to bring home.

Yup... yup yup.... it's 8 pm now and all the donuts are gone... yummm.
Best part of the day :)

Rose Apple - Jambu Mawar

Okay...
so I gave my mom a "look" when she bought this particular fruit.
Let's see, it's tiny, and pale in colour, it's a rose apple type of fruit, which I'm not really crazy about.
It's called Jambu Mawar,
well, Jambu is Rose apple, and Mawar is Rose,
so this makes it a Rosy Rose Apple.
Okay... there's no hint of Rose-y color anywhere, maybe a little orange-y.
And it looks unripe.

We got home, chuck everything in the fridge and had dinner.
So the next day, my sis hands me this piece of fruit and said,
"try this.... it's so fragrant."
And So I did, I'm the kind of person who must try everything and anything, well except for insects and their friends.
So I smelled it.
And it smelled like the fruit's been soaked in Rose perfume.
I thought to myself, I bet it's gonna taste so weird and synthetic.

So I took my first bite.
and I was like Whooooooa.......
it's sweet with an amazing hint of Rose, it's a perfect combination.
It's like when you smell a Rose flower, and wonder what the flower tastes like, except when you actually eat the flower, it's kinda bland, well, this is like what Rose should taste like.
The Rose fragrant is obviously there, but not overwhelming, just perfect.

In fact you can even distill them to make Rose Water and it would be equivalent to those made out of Rose petals, no wonder it tastes sooo good.
It's like having one of those Rose infused dessert or a Rose macaron, but this is so light and crisp.
It kinda made me think that this is what Royalty eats. Kings and Queens and the like. hoahahah
It's a perfect fruit.
(btw, some are kinda bland, but the sweet ones are perfect, so you never know what u're getting really hohoho)

So I rushed to the kitchen, cut one up, the seed inside was not even attached to the fruit.
You can shake the Jambu Mawar, and feel the seed bouncing around inside.
Yes, you can even just use barehands to open the fruit up.

I've never had Rose Apple like dat before.
I've had Jambu Air (Eugenia aquea / Syzygium samarangense (syn. Eugenia javanica)),
Jambu Bol (Syzgium malaccense) & Jambu klutuk ( Psidium guajava)
some are sweet, some are sour, some are both, some taste kinda like when you bite a grape skin, but they don't smell and taste like Rose.

So...
When you see a Rose Apple,
go ahead and give it a try, hopefully you find the perfect Rosy one :)

Cute Lovely Cupcakes

Okay... First of all, Imagine the wonderful smell of freshly baked cupcakes coming from the kitchen.
And you rush to the kitchen to see these lovely tiny lil cupcakes presented on a lovely two tier porcelain cake stand.

Oowww... right... :)
They're just the perfect size,
the perfect soft rosy pink colour and a touch of light green.

On the side, you have tea ready to be poured into this gorgeous little teacups.

What a perfect afternoon !! :)
This is the perks of sleeping over at your best friend's house, who loves to bake.

Ginger Bread House for Christmas 2008

So my friend who promised me the Ginger Bread Cookies finally made me a Ginger Bread House as a Christmas presento.... yippieee.....

Here's a pic of the facade..... yummm.... So pretty rightt ?

She made everything from scratch and Guess how long it took her to made this snowy house of yummy treats ?
7 hourss.... yup dat's seven hours of baking and decorating.

About the Ginger Bread Cookies, well, she only had little dough left, so she only made me 4 ginger bread cookies.... fourrrrrr..... just four yummy cookies and I had to share it with people at home. *sob*. And it wasn't actually a recipe for ginger bread cookies coz it was for the ginger bread house, but no diff for me hohohohoho they taste just as good. yumm...

Anyhow, she told me not to start eating-away parts of the Gingerbread House just yet, "not until Christmas", she said.

I said "whattt?? how is that even possible ? it's 20 days away till Xmas"

So we decided to at least wait a few days more, so the next time she comes visit me, She can still admire her work, hohohoho

But.... Do you notice any difference between these 2 photos below ?

here's a big clue

and that was 20 minutes after my lovely Ginger Bread House arrived and my friend was in the bathroom.... She didn't even notice the difference. :D

We'll see what else might go missing in the days to come.

Toko Titan - Baking Tools and Supplies

I finally had the chance to go to Toko Titan at Fatmawati.

My friend was looking for Baking Tools and I was looking for a high quality Vanilla essence / extract to make cheesecake... yummm....

After quite the traffic, we got there, It was kinda hard getting a parking spot :( but luckily my friend's bf was willing to be driver of the day hohoho

Once we got inside the store.... my friend just lost it haeuihaheau
It was like a lil kid in candy land, she was busy looking for cookie cutters, chocolate molds, looking at canisters, and mostly she was calling my names every 5 seconds and saying "hey come take a look at this, so cute" or "I kinda don't really need this, but I so wanna have it"

It was slightly crowded inside the store, because it was approaching Idul Fitri 2008, so it was a bit hectic inside.
The store is not too spacious, but I'd say it caters to most of bakers' needs.

I just found out that there are many different types of butter to use for baking hohoho and they're sold by the kilo... there are different types of chocolate chips, icing sugar, brown sugar, flour, and at the back end of the store, is where you find all the cookie cutters, dough cutter, chocolate moulds, different shapes of baking pans, etc
And on the second floor is where they held the baking classes, in collaboration with Bogasari Baking Center.

I bought a small bottle of Mauritius Vanilla Extract, (white small bottle in photo above), The lady said the Mauritius Vanilla is more fragrant, if I'm not mistaken it cost around @Rp. 28.000,- (Sept 08).
So from one big glass bottle of Vanilla Extract (Which they also sell there) , they pour it to small plastic bottles and sell them for us who don't need a big bottle of vanilla extract.

I also bought small bags of Pistachio nuts, Almond flake, almond powder and Java almond / kacang kenari (cannarium indicum). which cost around Rp. 7000 - 12.000,- per bag.
They also sell them in bigger bags.

So my friend bought some cookie cutters in different shapes : angels, giraffe, gingerbread man, christmas tree, n other shapes, plus a thing to cut dought, what's it called ? a dough cutter ? hohoho (top right in the pic above)

They weren't too expensive, err.. I think, I can't really remember , this is what happens when I blog about this 2 months after going to the store (Sept 08) hhohohoho sowwy. But I think the dough cutter cost around Rp. 28.000,-... I think.... hoho

How to eat a Dragon Fruit ?

Well, it's more how to cut open a Dragon Fruit actually :)
So you know how they taste like , right ?
Kinda bland :(
But waittt !!!
When you get the sweet one, ahh... it's heavenly.
It's got a different kinda texture, kinda like a kiwi fruit, but not as sour, but they also have those tiny crunchy little seed...mmmm :)

Now, the question remains, how do you open it ?
Some people would just cut it in half and scoop it with a spoon, like they would with a Kiwi Fruit. But hey, what if you wanna eat it while watching TV or when you wanna sit out in the terrace & read books ?

It'be kinda messy, right ?

So, here's how
what's that ? you can cut it like you would an apple ?
peel the skin with a knife ? naahh... dat's boring

Here we go...
you can peel it with your hands !!
huh ?? yup dat's right

first, cut both ends

then cut the side, just a little bit

then you peel

dat's right, as easy as that !!

tadaaa.... kinda like magic huh ?

now you can start cutting the dragonfruit :)

Quick Egg Rice

The rice is inside ! huh ?
So it's 2 am and you got so hungry, need food, but you don't really wanna cook, not to mention all the crazy dishes...
what's that ? you'd rather starve ?
Well, Now you can make Quick Egg Rice !! ,
instead of having rice and scrambled egg / fried egg / sunny side up.
d'uh.... boringgg.....

This one require minimum equipments, so if you didn't do the dishes right away, you won't get into trouble the next day.

Equipments :
1 tablespoon of tablespoon. huh ? I mean 1 spoon
1 non stick pan / teflon (diameter 4.72 inch / 12 cm or bigger)
1 plate (if you're planning to eat from the pan, eliminate plate)
yup.... dat's all u'll need

Ingredients :
Rice
Egg (for those of you who thinks the bigger the better, use Ostrich egg.)

Ready ?

hey... wat about the seasonings ? it's gonna taste bland
well... once it's done, just add salt n pepper, sweet soy sauce , chilli sauce , etc. easy right....

Tips : If you're not really hungry-hungry, you can use one of those tiny non-stick pan, 1 egg and 2 tablespoon of rice, but If you're really hungry, use a bigger non-stick pan, more eggs, more rice.

But if you're unsure how much you should add, just use the tiny non-stick pan and repeat process 10 times, same diff.

Let the adventure begins !!

1. Add a lil bit of oil to the pan.
Low heat. Add the egg
(I am using 4.72 " / 12 cm diameter pan)

2. Yes, you swirl and twirl the egg in the pan.

3. Add rice to your distinctive liking

4. Slightly flatten rice

5. Be patient.... if it's half done on top, you can flip it

6. *plop* ta daaaaaa, wait a while , and...

7. There you go.... decorate to your liking, dream high !
add salt n pepper, sweet soy sauce, chilli sauce,
blueberry sauce, maple syrup (oopss... not pancake)

8. Ta daaa.... sliced and you can see the rice
*it kinda looks like pacman* hohho

Creative Baking

I love watching Food channel.......how they prepare the ingredients, how the chef quickly thinly-slice carrots, how the chef multitask cooking with 2 boiling pans, sauteeing, dealing with food processors and host the show at the sametime, and how they enjoy the meal at the end of the show..... mmmmmmm
Not to mention when they're making desserts...... Cheesecake, Mudcake, Ongol-ongol, Talam Ubi,.,.....ohhhhh........ how I wish I was having them right now *drool*

I also love reading food blogs, and looking at pictures of the ready-to-be-eaten-yummy-yum-yum final product.

So, I was having a conversation with my sis the other day, she just moved into a new house and she doesn't have an oven yet.
So she can't start baking for me..... yes for me & my incredibly amazing sweet tooth. :)

But hey..... what about steaming ? ........ there are a lot of desserts that doesn't require baking, right ?
Brownies doesn't have to be baked..... take a look at Brownies kukus, or Tiramisu doesn't need baking either.

What about the Local desserts,
they're mostly wrapped in leaves and steamed, right ? .... :)

Take a more creative approach, and experiment, like a Red Dragon Fruit Cheesecake..... how bout dat ? :) Wanna see the pic, go here

Cooking Chicken Curry, Rendang Beef Stew, well... do it with your own personal unique touch, add a little twist here and there, experiment a bit and present it with style :)

You have no idea how fun cooking can get, especially when creating desserts, try making and decorating cupcakes, pies, cheesecake with any topping imaginable, tiramisu, greentea cake, or why not make ice cream, now dat all falls under "cooking" category.... yummmm.... :)

Or try making traditional desserts, use what's available locally, sweet potato with coconut cream and brown sugar or taro, and many more...

So...Let's get busy in the kitchen :D

Can you play music in the dark ?

When I was still living in Sydney, Australia,
I dared a friend of mine whether she can still play the piano in the dark.
She said she can, and since we can use the Piano room in our school during recess, so we went there that day.
So she sat in front of the piano, and I turned off the lights and just stood by the door coz it was pitch dark.
And she started playing the piano......
and she played it extremely well, no mistakes at all !
I was so impressed...

I make lots of mistakes even when I'm playing in a well-lit room with the music score in front of me.... huhuhu it's probably lack of practice.

So you can see why Artists like Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder can still contribute so much in the music world even though they can't see. :)

And you know what,
if you can play music in the dark, you can concentrate more to the music, you can 'hear' clearer if you make mistakes or if the tempo is too fast.

So why don't you try it, just for fun,
try practising music in the dark :)
Turn off the lights, or try closing your eyes when playing music.
Who knows you'll be more aware of your technique and you may even develop your talents :D

20 years Purwacaraka Music Studio

Yesterday, on the 23 Nov 08, I happened to be home, flicking channels on TV and at 4 pm, there was this Concert to celebrate 20 years of Purwacaraka Music Studio at Indosiar (TV Channel)
The event was actually held on the 15 Nov 08, but it went on air on the 23 Nov.

So... it's a concert of Purwacaraka's talented students, plus Purwa Caraka Light Orchestra, n there was also Marcell , Trie Utami, with Choky Sitohang as the host.

Guess what..... They were playing the song "The Final Countdown", and then the camera zoomed to this drummer who was a little boy !!! His name is Naufal and he's merely 3.5 years old, Imagine that !!!

Here (youtube) you can see a clip of Naufal and other talented kids being interviewed.
n there, Naufal said "Let's play dum (drum).... Metal !!!"
Sooo cuteeeeeeee .... hohohohohoho

There was also a clip on drum ensemble, here (youtube again), kinda like percussion.

Ugghh...I didn't get a chance to record the event from TV, so I was looking for clips on youtube, but all I can come up with are these two huhuhuhu.

It was a really great event, it just goes to show that there are a lot of talented kids in Indonesia :)

There was also a brief interview with Purwacaraka, I forgot his exact words, but it goes something like this "I get to do what I like, which is my hobby and it's fun and it get to do it for a living"
How cool is that :)

And Trie Utami, his sister who's a talented singer said that 99.99% of Professors/Scientists abroad can play music. Dat's amazing right...

Then we've come to the end of the show where Trie Utami sang one of Indonesian National songs "Tanah Airku" by Ibu Sud,

What is the right age for your Child to start learning Music ?

When is the perfect time for a music lesson ?

We hear so many different suggestions....
" Age 3 is a good age to start a piano lesson "
" No no no.... a 3 year old is too young, it's better to start at age 5 !
" But when the kid start when he's 5, it's too late, he needs to develop his musical sense at a very young age"
The debate is endless....

The true answer differs in each kid. Why ?
Well,
Every Kid is unique in their own right.
Your kid is unique !!

Mozart created his little pieces at the age of 5, but that doesn't mean your child has to be able to compose a song at the same age.

Some will show interest to music at a very young age, while some at a later age.
You can in fact learn music at a later age and still be able to play beautifully. :)

So There's no need to rush you child to a music lesson at age 3,
let your child show you what his/her interests are.
Even if you wanna star at age 3, dat's totally fine. As long as the kid's not pressured.... because learning music is supposed to be Super Fun :)

Some pre-schools even give musical introduction classess where kids are free to play around with different kinds of musical instruments. That will help you see what their interests are.
Hey... you can even do that at home..... just get some musical toys and just let him/her have fun. Observe their interests of course :)
Don't force them to learn the piano if they're more interested in the violin, , they may even be more interested in playing the drums !! :)

Their interests may change in time, so just let them have fun for now.
Let them sing along, let them create music of their own. Because when they love what they do, learning becomes so much fun.
I'm sure you'll want to see that big smile when your child is practising.

Now, what about yourself ?
What is the perfect time for You the learn music ?
Well... the answer's is simple,
The Perfect time is Right Now...
Right where you want to learn, that's the Time :)

You see... the "It's too late and I can't read music" excuse, won't work.
Maybe it's time you start taking that music lessons you've been delaying and actually start playing music :)
It's not really that hard if you really want to....and then you can stop day-dreaming or imagining playing the piano / other instruments.

You'll definitely add warmth & a feeling of togetherness.

if you've never heard of this girl, you must not own a TV or a Radio.
oh, so you have ? :) *smiles*

I can't even begin to describe my awe towards this girl.
A four fingered girl that plays the piano better than most of us.

This is for you out there who thinks that you can't, well you can !!

Even if you think that you're not very musical or you can't play any instruments, well guess what, you can still create musical lyrics, not lyrics about your secret lover and such, but lyrics like

"When you believe" (Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston) , etc,
meaningful lyrics that motivates other people.

And when you start doing something that you love, all other things follow, and soon you find yourself playing an instruments, or even singing, and opportunities will open up.

Just imagine..... a performance without dialogues, just counting on body movements / gestures, and facial expressions, sometimes accompanied by music.
Now, just when you think "Hey, that doesn't sound so hard"
Remember when you were trying to tell something to your friend from afar and he couldn't understand you even when you used gestures, facial expressions and he still didn't understand when you try to silently pronounce the words to him. Well... try performing on a stage where the audience have to understand the storyline, or evoke their feelings and make them feel sad or happy.
Doesn't sound so easy , does it ?

Or if you had to mime an animal .... say a horse, How can you let people know that you're a horse, instead of a pony or a cow or other four legged mammals ?

What gestures or body language that will differentiate these animals and how can other people guess right away, that you're miming a horse ?

If you've been in a Theater workshop, and you must mime, you'll surely know that miming is not as easy as you think it is :)
You definitely have got to be observant and it seems like you have to practice often in front of a mirror :)

They are called Laskar Pelangi, or Rainbow Warrior, because they all love Rainbows :)

Acting Happy is being really Happy

We all can act like we're happy.
Especially when we're feeling a bit down, sometimes we're all smiley and we 'pretend' to be happy.
We don't even need to be Actors to do that, right ?

well, guess what ? happiness is a choice, and you don't have to pretend and act happy, you can Just be happy, right now.
Yes your problems might still be there, but instead of pretending, you can choose to be genuinely happy, even for that brief 2 minutes, and that makes all the difference.

What does it have to do with acting and theaters anyway ?
It doesn't matter whether you're a student, a mom or a professional actor.
We all have our down time and since "the show must go on", we put on our happy mask.
Well.... the secret is, you simply let go of the happy mask and just be happy, truly genuinely happy.

Have you ever heard of the Laugh Therapy ?
Did you know that even when we're pretending to be happy, when we smile and even when we laugh out loud, the brain doesn't know the difference and thinks that we ARE really happy.
(not crazy happy, just happy happy) :)
I'm assuming the benefit will be much more if we actually choose to wanna BE happy when doing it.
So, when you have to "act" happy, get into character, really get into your character, let go of the happy mask and BE sincerely HAPPY :)

Ready be happy ?
Take a deep breath, smile, be Happy and laugh out loud like you mean it.

what about surprised, delighted, feeling down, secretive, being proud, etc, All of those things can be "seen" in your voice.
Hmm... Guess it's time to keep on brushing up our Acting skills :)

But seriously, it's unbelieveable how convincing they are, their acting moves you till you get goosebumps sometimes, they make you cry & they make you laugh really hard.

Do you sometimes think that "hey, probably I can do that" or "hey acting doesn't seem too hard, maybe I should do it" , Do those lines ever cross your mind ?
Well... why not do something about it ?
You'll never know unless you actually try an acting class. :)

Adult Beginners Ballet Class ?

So you want to take a Ballet class, but you're over 30 ?
Or you want to take a Cha cha lesson, but you already have grand children ?
or you want to take a Tap dancing class but you're only 5 years old ?
Don't worry bout it, If you're really interested in it.... If it makes you happy... Why not give it a try anyway ?

Take a friend of mine, Tari, for example.
She used to take Ballet class when she was a kid, but for some reason, she stopped and when she was 23, she still wanted to have Beginners Ballet lessons, but she felt that she was too old.
So she started browsing the net, and it turned out , abroad, there are a lot of people over 40 who still take Ballet class, even guys !!

So she started calling Ballet schools to ask whether they offer Adult Beginners Ballet class, she called almost every Ballet school she could think of, but most of them offered classes for kids and teens, or Jazz Ballet for Adults, but Tari wanted to take the Classical Ballet class.
Some even offered Private Classes , but Tari wanted to be in a class with other people.

Untillll.....

She found one at Sumber Cipta Ballet school at Ciputat, near Pondok Indah.
Even though it was quite far from her house, she went there anyway, excited :)
And she met all these lovely ladies, 90% of them were Japanese and there was even one lady with grey hair, who was probably 65 years old.
Ibu Farida Oetoyo herself taught that class.
Tari was soooooooo happy she found that place :)
Even though nowadays she doesn't continue taking the class, but it goes to show, that if you look hard enough, there are other people in different age groups with the same hobby as you are.

That class with the Japanese ladies at Sumber Cipta doesn't exist anymore now, but I think they still offer Adult Beginners Ballet classes.
I'm not advertising for them, but at that time, Tari could only find the Adult's class there :)
There are probably other classes at other places.... go find out.

Other solution is to get a bunch of your friends or look for friends in forums with the same hobby, and then get a "private" lesson together with those new friends :)

It doesn't really matter whether you're 5 or 60 years old. If you start searching, you'll bound to find someone else with the same hobby as yours.

So don't ever think that you're too young or too old to take any class.

They both collaborated and performed Balinese Dance accompanied with Classical Music, Can you just imagine how interesting it was ??
On the plus side, The performance was free of charge !!!!!
so be sure to come next time, ok :)

Just Dance

Have you ever watched a Ballet performance , Balinese dance, or even Ballroom dancing on TV and unconciously, your body starts to tingle and you feel like you wanted to join them and "fly" in the movements ?

I have a friend who's always loved Ballroom dancing, be it cha cha or waltz, & finally she's convinced me to take up a private Ballroom dancing course. (I'm more of a ballet & traditional dancing person).

So we went there & I could tell that she truly enjoyed it. Me on the other hand, decided that Ballroom dancing is not really for me, I kept on forgetting the steps hohoho.

So.... when I decided not to continue the class, she didn't continue either , saying it's not fun doing it alone.
But on our social occassions, she still practices the steps from what she remembered, while I've forgotten most of the cha cha steps, you could see that her face lights up while doing it. Still she talks about wanting to take another lesson, but is still looking for a friend to go there with. Months passed and still she hasn't found anyone.

So, I searched for a dance class for her, dragged her there, and enrolled her for a cha cha group lesson.
and the rest is history :), she found lots of new friends there, with the same interest I might add. She goes there twice a week and when I see her, she's happier and she looks much fitter. and I'm happy for her. :)

The thing with wanting to do something you love is it's sometimes held back because of unecessary reasons.
When you know you want to do something and it's come up over and over again, you should just go ahead and do it, and you'll see that your life will be so much better.

Let's see... there are Traditional Balinese dancing, Jaipong dance, Topeng (mask) dance, Piring (plate) dance, Saman dance....and even moreeee.

There are also Classical Ballet, JAzz Ballet, Contemporery Ballet..
And also Salsa dance, Chacha, Waltz, Tango, Tap dancing, and Belly Dancing.

Which one should you choose ?
It's all up to you :)

Don't be afraid to start, if you wanna know more about a specific dance, just request to have a look at the class, once you know which dance you like, go ahead and join them :)

Runny Color - extreme

I recently bought a pair of new jeans.... yeay rite :)
So happy after some retail therapy, plus I do need new jeans ;p

So... when I washed them (yep, washed them myself)
The color was so runny...........
This is a pic of the third soak/rinse water.
That doesn't look like textile color staining the soak water, it looks more like I'm soaking my jeans in dark blue ink.
How crazy is that ?

Jeans are still inside the bucket, see how dark the water is ?

There....jeans outside the bucket, you should see the first rinse water.

I bought the jeans in one of a famous clothing store.
uuaarrgghhh.....
Just imagine if I didn't wash them before hand, and wore them right away and it rained..... fun right ? imagine blue underwear ;p

What kind of textile color are they using anyway ?
Jeans usually stains when rinsed, but never crazy like this....
I'm kinda scared to even wear it....

Sketch !

Brush up your painting skill by doing Sketches, Lots of sketches. :)
Sometimes we overlook the importance of doing sketches or drawings or doodling.
well, it really helps, and in time, your skill will definitely improve.

Keep a sketchbook with you at all times, they come in different sizes so you can get one that will fit inside your bag and a bigger one to sketch / draw at home.

Sketch whenever you have time and when the sketchbook is all filled up, take a look at your first sketches and do a comparison with your latest sketches.
You'll surely see a difference there :)

Don't limit yourself to a sketchbook, although it's nice to have all your artwork in one book, you can still sketch on anything, notebooks, photocopy papers, even napkins.

Use pencil or pens, and you can even add color.
How ?
just get one of those mini sets of tiny pencil colors, or one of those tiny watercolor palettes and color away.
You can always upgrade your art supplies when you skill's improved.

Don't know what to sketch ?
Take a look around, you have magazines & comic books, flip around the pages and you'll see something you want to sketch, or the interior of your house, furnitures, cars, motorcycles, trees, pets, family members, anything can be sketched.

You can even go outdoor and sketch, try sketching anything, it can be a cool architecture or statues in a museum, or landscapes, people passing by, even animals at the zoo.

Some people might even try to peek what you're sketching, so if you're shy about showing your artwork, well, it's always nice to have your friends sketching along with you.
So Ask your friends to come along, and you'll definitely have fun. :)

Learn how to paint

You've always wanted do take a painting class, but you don't think you're talented enough, what if your painting turns out ugly ? It'd be so embarassing. and you think to yourself "I'm not talented enough, I probably shouldn't take a painting class" But, everytime you see a painting, the urge keeps on coming back and you keep on wondering. Hmm..... :) Why do you have to feel embarrassed ? Why must you be afraid to try ? If you never try then you'll never know.

Now you're sure that you wanna take that painting lesson, but you have no idea where to go, nor what painting supplies to get.

Well..... since you're a beginner, you can buy oil / acrylic / watercolour paint set, etc. There are a lot of brands out there, Reeves, Sakura, Staedtler, Faber-Castell, etc. You don't have to buy the more expensive, professional grade paint nor buy all the available paint colours, you can just get a set of 8 to 12 paint tubes, that would be enough, you can always mix those colours to create a different colour.
Paintbrush for Oil and Acrylic paint are about the same, you can get "Eterna" brand which is cheap suitable for beginners,
and Watercolor paintbrush is the softer round type. You can also get palettes, they're usually available in bookstores such as Gramedia, Gunung Agung, or sometimes even at a shop near your house :)
Not sure which brand to get ? well, it doesn't really matter which brand at this point, just buy the ones that you like most, and when you get better, you can always upgrade your painting supplies :)

Painting with Oil Paint can be an option because of the longer dying time, it's easier to blend on the canvas, but the smell's a bit strong , and you need a thinner type solution to rinse the paintbrush... so you're gonna need to paint in a well ventilated area :)

Or you can choose Acrylic paint, doesn't smell and you can rinse it with water and soap, dries quickly, so your painting's "done" in
no time, but blending colours on the canvas might be a bit difficult because the paint's quick drying time. But you can always add a retarding medium to slow drying rate, or learn the proper technique :)
I personally prefer Acrylic paint because I paint in my room so the room doesn't smell hehehe I used to work with Oil paint and after I painted, the room would smell like Oil paint for hours.

Or if you'd prefer watercolor, go ahead,.... I'm kinda scared to work with watercolor, because corrections are a bit hard to do, but it's just me, you can always learn it and a lot of people say that watercolor's easy to learn :)

Now that you know which one is your paint of choice, next step is looking where to take the painting lessons.
I suggest you do a "survey", you can call to ask the class schedule so you can come a have a look around at the class and other students' artworks, even the instructor's artwork. Because you'd wanna learn from someone whose work you like, if not admire, so if you're not really feeling "it" with this one, go look for another art class.

Once you got the right art class, complete painting supplies, well.... let all the Fun begin !!!
So.... don't ever be afraid to start :)

But, it's not just an ordinary scribble, because you leave your own unique style in that each scribble. And when you train and develop that simple scribble, you will create a great artwork :)

Paperclay

Heyy... dat's cute, what is dat made of ?
Dat's Paperclay :)

Paperclay has quite a similar characteristic to ceramic clay or play-doh. They all can be shaped to your liking.

But unlike ceramic clay, paperclay doesn't need to go into the oven to harden. And it's also not like play-doh's soft texture.
When it's dry, paperclay hardens and is ready to be colored :)

So, after you made a shape / design that you like, wait until it's dry, ranges from a few hours to a few days according to how big the shape is, then it's on to the coloring session.

After it's colored, your paperclay artwork is usually varnished with the option of glossy or doff.
and tadaaaa.... your artwork is ready to be displayed at home :)

You can make any design that you want out of Paperclay, the above picture is an example of a simple design without any special tools. If you want, you can also make a more detailed designs, such as a porcelain doll, complete with lace.

Learn how to Batik

For those of you who have been "dyeing" to know how to Batik,
come on down :)

You can choose to make it on a handkerchief-size cotton cloth, on which you can draw whatever you want, add your own name or signature, you can also draw a traditional batik pattern / motif, and choose your own colours ? aiyaa, of course you can lah :D

Then the wax is heated , and the canting moves according to the pattern.

In Jakarta, at the Museum Tekstil, there's also a Natural Dye Garden, a 2000 square meters garden filled with plant collections of which the flower / bark / or leaf of those plant/trees can be used to dye batik ,
cool huh ?

Batik Technique ?
well, you've got to try it out for yourself to know how :)
Ask your friends to come along , it'd be cool to learn how to batik with your good friends :)

Imagine this, learn how to batik, add a personal touch to your batik design, take pictures of course, after that ? it's food time....:) yummmm.... *always hungry*
or you're coming alone ?
don't wory, just come and meet new friends there :)

Hmm.... what would be even better if you have the option to choose what you want to make, for example.... cotton materials are provided in certain sizes according to what you want to make (table cloth, pillow case, cushion cover, etc) and then after you're done batik-ing, the Museum Tekstil can send them off to home industries to sew those batiks into end products of your choice.
Yes, of course you can do this yourself, but you'd wonder about the size of the cloth, or which model to choose , or where to make the table cloth / pillowcase ? See, it'd be much easier if there are already samples at the Museum Tekstil right ?
So if you're wondering what great personalized gift you can give to your mum or your friends abroad, you can choose batik ideas, and add your own message at the "special gift".
Hhmmm... this could be a great additional idea for Museum Tekstil :)

Can you tell us how KDRI was formed ?
The concept of KDRI was formed just like that... I wanted to have a blog that could inspire lots of people... and what I thought was interesting was to evoke people to be proud of their own country, Indonesia, coz all this time Indonesian kids are prouder of another country. They prefer wearing T-shirts from other countries, and this is "dangerous" :p... they could 'lose' their nationality.
Now what I did was to reflect on myself, what skills I could use, it turned out to be design and animation. and We can create whatever we want on the Internet, and I was having fun thinking whether or not I could be a Minister without having to go through a complicated bureaucracy...
Why a Minister ? coz it's one of those position that can make you be heard.
And so I became a Minister of Design , and now when I'm online, people refer to me as Mr. Minister instead of my real name :p

Tell us about the history of KDRI and HelloMotion, Were you a KDRI Spokesperson/Minister first or did you founded HelloMotion first ?
I founded Hellomotion first and 2 years later, I created KDRI.

Can you share what's your typical day is like ? from waking up, working, snacking and staying up late at night.
Wake up... spend time with wifey... spend time with my laptop... shower.... watch TV for a while... off to work.... spend time with office's Computer.... handle reports from employees.... problem solving if any.... do a presentation if there's a client.... create design / artworks when there are offers.... chatting.... go home.... download movies.... chatting.... spend time with wifey..... watch TV with wifey.... sleep.... morning excercise if not sleepy (mostly sleepy)

How many hours a day do you use to maintain KDRI website ?
2 hours.... after I'm done with work at Hellomotion.

Has anyone ever told you off / gotten angry coz their logo got changed or their design criticized ?
yup... lots of times :p
that's the beauty of it... if we got told off, it means our design is bad... or it's them who're not sensitive to change / bad taste hehe...
but I take it all as a positive input... coz that's what I'm looking for... and something dat stirs an uproar ... that's what makes you alive.

or how do you handle all the commotion handling hellofest. and basically, how do you handle "all the lil bugs along the way" ?
my principle is, as long as we like doing it.... it's "heavy" but it's enjoyable... and as long as we still have the energy... why not go ahead and do it....

I watched Mas Waditya on MetroTV the other day, on "Wirausaha Muda Mandiri", and your Advice to "stay green" is stuck with me now :) Tell us about being on tv... Did you prepare a speech ? or did you get nervous ? or during the commercial break, did you got "ambushed" by Make-up Artists to do make-up and hair ? (this is the after effect of wathing too many Holywood movies hohoho)
I happen to have worked in TV before starting my own business, so I kinda know what TV situation is like....
No preparation prior to the show, coz you didn't know any of the questions until the shooting... so I improv more....
during the break... I mostly chatted with Dian Sastro & Renald Khasali....
and guys don't get that much make up like girls do :p

My goals :
I want to be number 1 best husband.

Feature - Antya's Chocolate Factory (Pabrik Cokelat)

Dat's all I can say when I first looked at her blog.
She creates chocolate designs, by request.
They're totally edible, and just take a look at the Packaging !!!!!

Your Chocolate designs and Packaging are awesome... Tell us, how did you end up "plunging" in the world of Chocolates ?
At first it was for fun, in High school usually girls give out chocolates to friends or boyfriends at Valentines. Well, I was one of those girls, rather than buying one, it'd more special to make your own.
So I started trying making my own chocolates, basically just melting, molding and wrapping them up in Aluminum foil.
At College, I made one for my bf, this time I started to also design the Packaging. and some of his friends saw it and asked if I could make one their special friends.
From there on, orders started coming, promotion was from word of mouth, and I started exploring more techniques on chocolate making and the packaging.

Design process & the Packaging !!! Tell us all about it :)
I usually sketch up something while talking to the clients, when I get the "OK", then I start designing it on the Computer, Adobe Illustrator mostly.
After printing them out, then I transform it into the Packaging :)
Initially I used to make the Chocolates first, them the packaging.... but it's kinda hard to get a packaging to fit my Chocolates, so now, it's the other way around.

Designers usually stay up late working
on projects, How about you ? :)
I stay up late a lot... coz I don't have enough time, If I had more time, I'd prefer not to stay up late, coz I get kinda tired hehehe..

Have you ever agreed on a price and it turns out that the whole thing cost way more ?
uhuh Dat happened before but that's okay, they're happy hehe and the design also becomes my portfolio, but now I'm more careful in predicting expenses for my next projects....

We saw you on TV !!! Tell us all about it
A friend of mine happens to work at O Channel and knows that I design chocolates, so I was offered to be a guest star in a show called "Cinta" hosted by Beckt Tumewu.
Not long after, I got another phone call to fill in a show "Profesi Jakarta" , I was extatic so I accepted the offer hehehe
The shoot took only 1 day, we started shooting from 11 am till 10pm.
It took longer than expected because the chocolate I made got broken because it was overheating due to the camera lightings hihiihihi.... and all the crew was patient enough to wait for me to fix it hiihhi....

You also design a T-shirt for ennea line di nanoninehouse.com That must have been fun !! Did you get involve in the whole process ?

I was offered to design, and I happen to know the owner of nanonine, at dat time, they needed a female designer, so I accepted the offer.
I was totally involve in the whole process, from cutting, shirt colour, material, deciding the theme, illustrating, to what kind of print process to use on the shirt.

My goals ? Live happily with my loved ones ! :)
how i see myself and my design in the future? hmm..in the future I'd like to concentrate more in sculpture, chocolate can be one of the media,

Have you ever heard of Ayang Cempaka ?
well, she's the talented girl behind Cocomomo designs.

She does custom handmade designs :
tote bags, passport wallets, diaper bags, laptop case, notebook backpacks, handbags, purse, lunch tote, brush roll make up case, backpack, messenger bag, and well, bras. :)

Woww right ?

She has her own blog where you can see most of her designs process, she also has an etsy shop, so you and you and you from overseas have the chance to own her designs.
And she's from Yogyakarta, Indonesia... yup dat's right :) so proud of her.

She doesn't just design a bag, she also pays attention to details, Just look at the photos, she chooses the inside lining of the bag to match the outer design, plus she's got tags. and She also models for her designs.
How Cocomomo was created ? Well, Ayang Cempaka is an Architect graduate, was bored working 8 to 4 everyday, resigned and was jobless, didn't know what to do and what her purpose in life was.
But she kept her recurring dream alive, that is to have her own studio and to do business at home where she can raise her future lovely children.
So... in order to transform her dream into reality.
She started from scracth, with near zero knowledge in sewing and computer graphic , not too much support from her family since she's supposed to be an architect not a "textile worker", omitted lazy from her vocabulary and with capital of merely Rp. 800.000,- She's now living her dream in the making.
And a year after, Cocomomo's getting more opportunities, business offers, and even opening up a shop !!

Hi Ayang :)
Usually designers stay up late and work at night doing projects, how about you ? :) Can you share what's your typical day's like ?
I usually sleep after 11 pm, doing sketches/designs and sewing ! haha.... because I don't have a fixed schedule, I'm free to sleep whenever. But I never wake up later than 5.30 am (yes I'm an AM person), and I like to work early. Maybe that's a habit in my family.... and because the person who sews for me is still a freelancer, I usually go out to check the work before 7 am. Material hunting is usually done around 8-9 am, coz the shops aren't located near, then I start working for as long as I need to.

What kinds of software do you use ?
How's the design process like ?
I usually use coreldraw to design. I'm not an expert at all, Honestly! I don't even know how to use Photoshop nor Coreldraw well. I'm an Architect major, so I'm more of an Autocad girl. When I first started, I was so lost using Coreldraw, so I used Autocad to design the shape of the bags ;)) And before that, well, it was all rough sketches on paper :)

How do you handle "all the lil bugs along the way" ?
Well, I've had my designs underestimated, Punctuality is always an issue with the freelancer, and sometimes my designs are considered imposible to made, just because they don't want to try and sew them. Not to mention when one of my design was stolen by my ex-freelancer and I had to cancel production for that particular design.
But hey... without all those obstacles, I guess I'll never learn, right ?

What are your goals and How do you see yourself and your designs in the future ? :)
I've always wanted to work at home and to have my own studio.
I love what I do, that's why I always try to give the best for my customers. I choose the best material I can find, I put my soul into my designs, so they can feel the love that I have towards each design process. I made them with love and care.
My goal is to have cocomomo handmade boutique in cities such as Singapore, London, Paris, NewYork, Japan, Milan. hahahaha... it's always wonderful to have a dream !
But in the near future, I'd like Cocomomo designs to be taken seriously by Indonesians. This is an Original Local Product worth appreciated.

What are your advice for those who wants to start creating something, but are somewhat afraid / dunno where to start. :)
It's important to have a dream. Imagine it , then make it come true. It's cliche, but really, nothing's impossible when you have a will and the effort to make it come true ;)

How many times do you take a picture before you get a good shot ?

One shot !
dat's all it's supposed to take.

Whether you are using a digital camera, a phone camera, a disposable camera, an analog camera, you only need 1 shot.
That is of course ideally speaking,
We usually take hundreds of pictures, snap snap and snap, even more with storage getting as big as 4 Gb, (even more), No wonder we are "not risking it", and opting to take as much pictures / photos as we possibly can.
That's where we're forgetting the essential step of planning.

Yup... dat's rite...
We tend to forget to plan, especially with automatic mode in our digital cameras, it's easy to just press and click click and see result and click again for better result.
But Sometimes, we only get one single chance to get that one perfect shot, and after that, the moment's gone.

So,
Plan what's going to be inside your picture
Figure out the right angle to take the picture
Consider the light, do you need extra flash ?
these will only take a minute, even seconds.

So why not practice now, Plan ahead to get that perfect one shot !!

Photography is a piece of cake ?

I've always considered Photography as an easy thing to do.
Why would anyone use a Manual Camera, there's so many rules and settings, and what's with the special lighting, hellow... we have a built in flash in the digital camera.
So far, being the "family photographer" , results have been good
So... why do people still take Photography classes ?

Well, I had nothing to do the other day and I wanted to try "product photography"

product = shoe

so the story goes :
*take shoe*
*arrange shoe setting on table*
*think to self = table kinda ugly*
*gets table cloth to cover table*
*puts shoe on tablecloth on table*
*just went jogging with those shoes the other day... fear not mum, will wash it later, .....i said later, ok* --> oh so politely
*starts taking pics*
*sees result on camera's LCD screen*
*think to self : hhmmm... some are good, some are a bit dark, some are blurry*
*strategy boost*
*adds study lamp for brighter effect*
*up ISO 100 to ISO 200*
*more pics taking*
*OH NO... results too bright...*
*turns off study lamp, change camera's ISO setting to 400*
*mm.... results not so good* ---> perfectionist , hoho :P
*house survey.... looking for new spot*
*mmm.... need natural lighting.... moves outdoor*
*drag table with cloth with shoe outside*
*arrange positions of "clothes-hanging-to-dry" so they won't show in photos*
*cameras hanging around neck, difficult to manouver, need to protect camera from more bumping into table and wall*
*think to self : needs an assistant photographer*

sooooo.................. results can indeed be improved hohohoho, all those pic taking are mostly experimental, trying this angle, trying this ISO setting, trying that lighting, bla bla.... if I knew a certain technique would give a certain results, or if I knew that technique X would has a certain effect on the results, I wouldn't have wasted a lot of time experimenting.
But don't get me wrong, a lot of professional photographers started by experimenting, if they can, you can too, or you can looks for information on the internet, and there are a lot of infos out there. But if you're really serious with photography, there's no harm in taking a Photography class or joining a photography workshops.
It's all up to you, but whatever you choose, remember what Mr. Steve Jobs said "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" so you'll continue on learning :)

Can you give me a recommendation of which music school I should go to ?

or a more qualified school that might be located a bit further away from your home.

And you can surely go to the forum and ask around :)
Hopefully you can find infos that fits your needs
Sanggarseni.com is not able to give you a specific recommendation coz
everyone has their own diverse requirements
So look around, ask around and when you have some schools that you're interested in.
Don't be afraid to give them a call and asks some questions
Go visit the school and see their facilites or even talk to the teachers.
You should find a music school and music teacher that you're comfortable with.
Learning should be fun :)

coz we all know how hard it can be to find the information to find the perfect art class

(yuppp... the dance originates from aceh, performed sitting down with accelerated movements,

it makes me recall bumping the forehead of the person next to me when I made a mistake hehe)
